One of my favorite shows on Television is called “My 600 Pounds Life” which airs on TLC. It is a show about people struggling with obesity. Each episode starts off with an extremely overweight person who, mostly, has been immobile for a period ranging from 3 to 6 years. The person’s living condition and weight takes a toll on their health and then things then move from bad to deplorable.
See The Choices
Knowing that they have a choice to do something about their weight and health or else they lose their lives; they always pick the right choice to fight for their lives by seeking help from a bariatric surgeon. Interestingly, the surgeon shows up and informs them that they have to lose some weight before any surgery can be done. And so they begin a difficult task of dieting and exercise to lose weight. Over a period of time given to commitment and discipline many of them get to lose enough weight. They go through by-pass surgery, lose the remaining weight, do flesh removing surgery if needed and begin to enjoy a new life of walking, working, shopping and travelling.
The first step towards achieving your goals in life may lie in the ability to be honest with yourself that you need help.
The Phase of Commitment
The real life characters in the show always start by acknowledging they need help and are never ashamed to ask and pursue it. I consider this inspiring. Perhaps the most impressive part in the weight loss schedule, to me, is their commitment to a new diet and determination to meet the goal (weight) determined by the doctor before surgery can be done. Since they are surrounded by family, friends and other experts, they assiduously meet the goals set by the doctor. They win on the path to lose weight.
Sometimes, you need help to resist temptation, make wise decisions, and get back up when you get knocked down. If you don’t ask for help, you won’t stand a chance.
Give Up Excuses
This is something to learn from if you need help to end an addiction, fix a stinking character or really do something that you know is snuffing life out of you, your career, business, marriage , relationship, education, talent or any other critical aspect of your life. It is time to give up the excuses. There is so much you stand to gain if you lose the pride keeping you from seeking help to get on the path which you really need to be to make yourself a better person. Sadly, some characters end up passing away because they sought help late or even rejected it when it was offered , while others struggled with giving up their old diet so as to make it to the weight needed for surgery to help save their lives.
Make the Right Choice
The Bible in 2 Kings 7:3-4 has this interesting story about four lepers who had a need and were faced with choices: “Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, “Why stay here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”
The first choice is to “go into the city”. The second choice is to “stay here” and the third choice is to “go over the camp of the Arameans and surrender”. Although they weren’t optimistic about their option to go with the third, however, they realized it was their only hope to survival.
When it comes to making the right choice to achieve your goal, pick determination above optimism.
