How not to Achieve Personal Improvement

In a world driven by an ever-increasing demand for excellence, performance improvement is having the edge.

In my desire to grow my career and everything around me, I invested in several goal-setting seminars and consumed every book, blogs or podcasts I could afford or lay my hands on.

The common denominator from all of these sources were laced with the stereotypes of strategies and stories of how to improve your performance.

Painstakingly and meticulously, I began to follow those strategies learnt and I tried replicating the success stories I have garnered from them all.

After a while, I figured out that I was still discouraged and disappointed in my myself.

My results clearly were not measuring up to the standards and metrics they have created.

My frustrations increased and the little progress I had made diminished as the days went by.

At some point, I paused and asked myself a few probing questions. “What if the problem is not with the steps I have taken? Could the problem be the statistics and standards that I was trying to measure up to?”

Then boom! The light bulbs came on!

It became clear to me that I had missed it. I had gone about performance improvement as defined and depicted by most people as it worked for them.

I realized that conscientiously yet erroneously, I was focusing all of my time and energy on trying to measure up to their systems, performance metrics and methodologies.

Little did I know that the only statistics or metrics that I needed to construct my today’s improvement metrics with, are my performance metrics from yesterday’s performance.

I like to inform you that some stories and strategies may end up giving you false hopes which could lead to unrealistic goals.

They just may leave you discouraged and disappointed in yourself if not properly guided. You need to understand that what worked for others might not work for you.

Improvement is never achieved by comparing yourself to others. That is competition!

Improvement is achieved by reviewing metrics or data from your previous performance.

Improvement is achieved by comparing your past with the current as you work to cover the gap(s) needed to become the future you so desired.

Improvement is achieved by reviewing metrics or data from your previous performance.

Don’t swim against the currents if your destination entails you swim with the currents.

Find out what pattern, strategies or standards that work for you and engage them.
